(DENTON, Texas - Dec. 2, 2025) The University of North Texas Asian Student Association (ASA) is a student-led organization that aims to foster a community where members can openly discuss Asian identities and cultures and find a group of people that will support them throughout their time at UNT. While ASA’s main demographic are Asians, they welcome anyone who doesn’t identify as Asian to be part of their organization.
For Public Relations Chair Katie Doss, ASA has been a fundamental part in her college experience thus far.
“My friend told me about the org and so we showed up to the first meeting together,” Doss said. “Everyone was nice and funny and it was also great bonding with others about Asian culture.”
Doss says she loves working behind the scenes and with being a public relations major, it's the perfect opportunity for her to explore the educational and cultural benefits of the organization.
ASA puts on many activities that are formal and informal, such as kickball tournaments or movie nights. Doss says that the members are all very close to one another and hangout outside the organization's time.
Despite smaller membership numbers this year, that doesn’t impact the ASA experience one bit. They still foster a tight-knit community whether it's with the 50 plus members last year or the 20 students part of the organization today. These number fluctuations are partly to do with overlapping schedules with ASA’s sister organizations, the Filipino Student Association (FSA) and the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA).
While the group doesn’t have any specific yearly traditions yet, Doss alludes to how this might change in the near future. However, this flexibility allows for ASA to evolve with its members and follow the interests, trends, and needs of their members, which ensures that the organization remains inclusive to all.
